In what’s being called a research “first”, Israeli scientists say they’ve used hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, to reverse 2 key components of aging in human cells.
Teams from Tel Aviv University and Shamir Medical Center revealed they got the effects by using HBOT for just 90 days on 35 healthy adults aged 65 and up, and didn’t change their diets, medications or lifestyles. HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen under pressure, and these researchers say HBOT shortened telomeres and reduced the number of dying cells now linked to cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and diabetes.
Many consider telomeres, the little protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes, the ‘Holy Grail” of longevity research. As we get older, our telomeres shrink, fray, and become less stable. That, in turn, can trigger inflammation and open the door to disease especially if we abuse our bodies with stress, poor diets, and smoking. Experts hope HBOT is a safe, painless intervention that has already shown promise for treating cognitive decline. Nearly every expert believes manipulating telomeres with medication would be extremely dangerous.
